Way of the Horse ~ Equine Archetypes for Self-Discovery

Way of the Horse grew from a shared curiosity between author Linda Kohanov and equine artist Kim McElroy about what horses reveal when we truly listen to them. First released in 2007, the work arose from years of observing that horses carry a quiet intelligence that speaks through presence, gesture, and relationship.

This book and card set was created as an invitation to explore that wisdom more consciously. Each of the forty-two cards introduces an equine archetype drawn from both the lived experience of horses and the symbolic language they have carried throughout human history. The images come from Kim McElroy’s pastel paintings, where each horse presence began to reveal a particular quality of awareness, from stillness and perception to courage, mystery, and transformation.

In the accompanying guidebook, Linda Kohanov explores the deeper meanings behind these archetypes and the behaviors of horses that inspired them. Together, the cards and teachings offer a way of reflecting on our own lives through the lens of horse wisdom.
