THE STORY BEHIND THE ART
This portrait is of a Friesian horse named Nottingham. His owner requested that I portray the medieval history of the Friesian breed. I went a step further and created a fantasy in which the horse emerges from the past into the present. Nottingham was the first Friesian I ever met, in 1991 when Friesans were relatively new to the USA. He was out of time and place, living in the Arizona desert. But I was struck by his gentle grace and his strong presence which seemed to evoke the presence of his distant homeland and the history of his breed.
