This painting was especially created for the Way of the Horse Book and Card deck, a collaboration featuring my illustrations with interpretations by the Linda Kohanov, author of The Tao of Equus and Riding Between the Worlds. This painting portrays an amazing moment of magic that occurred with my mare, Darma. I was photographing her beautiful eye in the shadows of her stall. Though I often create paintings of reflections in horse's eyes, it wasn't until the photo was developed, that I saw there was a shape of a horse reflected in Darma's eye. I was momentarily confused, because she was the only horse in the stall. Then I realized the only explanation was that her eye had caught the image of herself in my camera lens, and reflected it back at me. Beyond mere coincidence, this incredible occurrence seemed to capture in one image, so much of what she means to me, and that for others, it could represent the infinite connections and life experiences that horses offer to those who love them. Dharma is the word in Eastern religions representing the chosen path. And indeed, horses truly embody our path to self-awareness.
