This painting was inspired when I saw an auction of an Illions' carousel horses in Saratoga Springs. Like many children, I always fantasized that carousel horses were alive, and I was saddened to see so many beautiful horses in such dilapidated condition. One of the horses called out to me, and I could see the beauty in him despite his scars. I researched Illions' horses, restoring this horse to the glorious colors and bright jewels of his youth. As I worked, I was inspired to add the shadow of a rearing horse, representing the spirit reawakening in the jeweled eyes of the restored horse.
