
In this composition, I attempt to draw the viewer's attention to the communication between the jockey and horse in the moments after they emerge from the starting gate. When I asked a jockey what position this rider was in, he said "He's taking a hold." The model for the horse is a famous racehorse named "Manila", ridden by jockey Jacinto Vasquez in the Early Times Turf Classic.
