This is a portrait of the racing mare Genuine Risk who was the first filly to win the Kentucky Derby in 65 years. When she was retired, several breedings sadly resulted in miscarriages. At last, at the age of 16 , she bore her first foal, appropriately named Genuine Reward. I was touched by her story and by this remarkable photograph which seems to convey her deep joy.

"Bliss"
"She breathed in the sweet, intoxicating scent of her young one,
as her ancient mothering instincts awakened
He stood blinking, as young ones do,
in innocent acceptance of the rightness of the world."
