I was inspired to paint this horse from a photograph I took at an Arabian horse show. The horse had just completed a performance in the hot sun of the Arizona desert. I decided to transform him into a beautiful war horse who impatiently awaits his masters bidding. The bridle was adapted from historical drawings. The original pastel was created on white silk, giving the painting a dramatic three-dimensional quality enhanced by the iridescent highlights of the pastel.
"The rigid curved neck, such as ancient sculptors modeled...
The interplay of muscle... in each of his poses he was...
the composite of all the equestrian statues of history."
